SPCA of Wake County SPAY/NEUTER DISCOUNT VOUCHERS
The link to purchase a voucher can be found at the bottom of this column. Please take the time to read all the info below -- especially the new FAQ and Tips section -- before you purchase a spay/neuter voucher.
The SPCA works with a group of dedicated local veterinarians to provide lower cost spay/neuter surgery to pet owners who might not be able to afford the one-time cost of spay/neuter surgery (defined for this purpose as household incomes under $50,000). Redeemable at the veterinary clinics (listed below left), this voucher provides a discount on the surgery fee. Other fees will be associated with this surgical procedure (see FAQ below). The SPCA is grateful to the veterinarians offering this discounted service.
Voucher costs:
- Male Cat: $46.00
- Female Cat: $56.00
- Male Dog: $57.00
- Female Dog: $76.00
If a household income exceeds $50,000, you may still receive a 20% discount off surgery. Donate $10 to the SPCA and receive a coupon good for 20% off the standard spay/neuter price at any participating veterinary practice. Thank you to our vets offering this deal!
Please take the time to read this FAQ and Helpful Tips. We get a lot of questions. Please read this first! The answer to your question can most likely be found below.
1- What does the voucher cover? The voucher provides a discount on the surgical fees only. Other fees will be associated with the surgery.
Here’s an example of other fees that might be associated with the surgery: For an adult male dog: $179.00 surgical fees (includes anesthesia, suture material and catheters) $42.50 pain relief medications $47.50 Pre-operative bloodwork ----------------------------------------------- Surgery total is: $269.00 The voucher reduces the price of the $179(surgical fees) to only $57.00
With the voucher, the surgery total is reduced to $147.00
2- What are some other fees that might be associated with my pet’s vet visit? Pre-surgical requirements and prices may vary radically from veterinarian to veterinarian. Some vets require pre-op bloodwork, some do not. Some vets require parasite testing (such as heartworms), some do not. Vets will vary on other vaccines that are required pre-surgery. All vets (and North Carolina law) require that your animal is up to date on a rabies vaccine.
**HELPFUL TIP: If you know your animal needs vaccines, call around to find a vet that will not charge an additional office visit. Many vets will charge a la carte for the vaccines at the same time as the surgery.
3- What if my cat/dog is in heat? Most vets will spay an animal in heat but some will not. When a female cat or dog is in heat there is an increased flow of blood to the uterus. Since the uterus is being removed during spay surgery, the surgery will require extra time, extra care plus additional suture materials and anesthesia and therefore there will be an additional cost.
4- What is an example of an additional fee that may be incurred during surgery? A female pet in heat is one example (see question above). Occasionally a male animal’s testicle will fail to drop and must be removed surgically out of the abdomen.
5- Can I use the spay/neuter voucher at any vet clinic? NO. These vouchers are only good at the participating veterinarians listed here. All of these vets are geographically located in the greater Wake County, North Carolina area.
6- Can the SPCA give me the different prices for the varying fees associated with each vet? No. You will need to call around to the vets and inquire based on your individual pet’s needs. Prices will vary based on your pet's sex, age, weight, vaccine history and current health.
**HELPFUL TIP: Prices may vary radically from veterinarian to veterinarian. There is nothing wrong with price shopping for these medical services. Call around to find the best fit for your finances and your level of desired service. Just please remember all these veterinarians that we are encouraging you to price shop are already generously providing a valuable service that the SPCA is grateful for.
6- Why can’t vets provide a deeper discount on spay/neuter services? Veterinarians are committed to helping all animals but veterinarians are also small business owners with employee salaries to pay and fixed costs such as rent and utilities. If veterinarians provided all the services they are asked for at little or no cost, pretty soon they all would be out of business.
