Spay / Neuter Vouchers

In addition to the Saving Lives Spay Neuter Clinic, the SPCA of Wake County works with a group of dedicated local veterinarians to provide lower cost spay/neuter surgery to pet owners who might not be able to afford the one-time cost of spay/neuter surgery (defined for this purpose as household incomes under $50,000).

Redeemable at the participating veterinary clinics listed below, this voucher provides a discount on the surgery fee. Other fees will be associated with this surgical procedure (see FAQ below). The SPCA is grateful to the veterinarians offering the discounted service.

Please take the time to read the FAQ below before you purchase a voucher. We get a lot of questions about the voucher program. The answer to your question can most likely be found below. The link to purchase a voucher can be found at the bottom of the page.

1. Which option does the SPCA have for the LOWEST price on spay/neuter surgery?
The Saving Lives/Spay Neuter clinic pricing is all inclusive and is siginficantly lower than the voucher pricing. Make an appointment at the low-cost Spay/Neuter Clinic here.

2. What does the voucher cover?
The voucher provides a discount on the surgical fees only. Other fees will be associated with the surgery.

Here's an example of other fees that might be associated with the surgery for an adult male dog:

Cost without Voucher: Cost with Voucher:

$179.00 Surgical fees (includes anesthesia, suture materials and catheters)
$42.50 Pain relief medications
$47.50 Pre-operative bloodwork
Surgery total without voucher: $269.00

$57.00 Surgical fees with voucher/cost of voucher (includes anesthesia, suture materials and catheters)
$42.50 Pain relief medications
$47.50 Pre-operative bloodwork
Surgery total with voucher: $147.00

3. What is the cost of a voucher?
~ Male Cat: $46.00
~ Female Cat: $56.00
~ Male Dog: $57.00
~ Female Dog: $76.00

4. What are some other fees that might be associated with my pet's vet visit?
Pre-surgical requirements and prices may vary radically from veterinarian to veterinarian. Some vets require pre-op bloodwork, some do not. Some vets require parasite testing (such as heartworms), some do not. Vets will vary on other vaccines that are required pre-surgery. All vets (and North Carolina law) require that your animal is up-to-date on a rabies vaccine.

     * TIP: If you know your animal needs vaccines, call around to find a vet that will not charge an additional office visit. Many vets will charge a la carte for the vaccines at the same time as the surgery.

5. What if my cat/dog is in heat?
Most vets will spay an animal in heat but some will not. When a female cat or dog is in heat, there is an increased flow of blood to the uterus. Since the uterus is being removed during spay surgery, the surgery will require extra time, extra care, plus additional suture materials and anesthesia. Therefore, there will be an additional cost.

6. What is an example of an additional fee that may be incurred during surgery?
A female pet in heat is one example (see question above). Occasionally a male animal's testicle will fail to drop and must be removed surgically out of the abdomen.

7. Can I use the spay/neuter voucher at any vet clinic?
No. These vouchers are only good at the participating veterinarians listed below. All of these vets are geographically located in the greater Wake County, North Carolina area.

8. Can the SPCA give me the different prices for the varying fees associated with each vet?
No. You will need to call around to the vets and inquire based on your individual pet's needs. Prices will vary based on your pet's sex, age, weight, vaccine history, and current health.

     * TIP: Prices may vary radically from vet to vet. There is nothing wrong with price shopping for these medical services. Call around to find the best fit for your finances and your level of desired service. Please remember all participating veterinarians are already generously providing a valuable service.

9. Why can't vets provide a deeper discount on spay/neuter services?
Veterinarians are committed to helping all animals but veterinarians are also small business owners with employee salaries to pay and fixed costs such as rent and utilities. If veterinarians provided all services at little or no cost, pretty soon they all would be out of business.

10. How do I purchase a voucher?
Click on the appropriate block below to purchase the corresponding voucher.

Once your purchase has been completed, you will receive an email message. Your voucher will be attached to that email as a pdf. Please print the voucher and bring it with you to your vet appointment. A hard copy will not be mailed to you.

To receive a voucher over email, the system requires one voucher purchase per transaction. You may purchase more than one voucher, BUT you must run your credit card each time. If you would prefer to purchase a voucher in person, you may do so at our Adoption Center during normal business hours.

     * PLEASE NOTE: There will be an additional charge of $20.00 per lost voucher if you misplace it before using it. Please treat the voucher like cash.
