Can You Believe? Can You Believe This Is the Same Dog?

Hope LOVES SPCA supporters! YOU gave her this gift of life. Thank you!

Hope still has a way to go in her journey. The outside wounds have healed but she still needs to heal from the abuse she suffered in order to be a good pet. The SPCA's Behavior Team continues to work on Hope's behavior rehab.

Hope also tested a strong positive for heartworms so she still has recovery to do. But look at that will to live. She loves being here, in this world. Thank you for making that possible.

Take a moment and watch Hope's new videos (posted April 2, 2009).

> Six Questions for the SPCA about Hope:Click here to donate

1- Is this the worst cruelty case you've ever seen?
Sadly, no, we have seen worse. Although this is one of the most brutal injuries we've seen in the past few months. She is missing most of her mouth on the right side and her leg is badly injured as well. Plus she has old injury scars.

Happy girl, Hope!2- Do you think this dog was involved
    in dog fighting?

Yes. She has many healed scars over her body that are consistent with tooth wounds. Her facial injury is also found in places where multiple dogs that are trained to fight are kept. One dog breaks loose from the chain and does what it is trained to do: attack. The attacking dog grabs onto the other dog's face and pulls down hard. She doesn't appear to have fought back and she was clearly used for many years of breeding. She has most likely spent her life fighting to stay alive then forced to produce puppies because she was able to stay alive.

3- What did you do for her injuries?
After our staff veterinarian examined her, Hope started on a course of strong antibiotics and medicine to alleviate pain. The facial wound and the leg had become horribly infected. Our veterinarian and consulting veterinarians will treat her physical wounds. However, she is scarred emotionally and behaviorally as well. The SPCA has a team of behavior professionals to design programs that rehabilitate dogs... Just like you see on TV, but right here in Raleigh, NC.

4- Do you think she is a bad dog?
There are no bad dogs, only bad people. She has exhibited extraordinary affection and desire for attention in her time with the SPCA. No dog at the SPCA is discriminated against because of their breed.
Hope, making friends
5- What is her prognosis?
Hopeful. She will enter into SPCA foster care on Friday. She's had a bad life, she deserves a chance to live. She deserves a chance to see what life can be like away from the abuse that she endured until now. The SPCA is going to give her that chance.

6- How can I help?
The largest source of SPCA funding is support from individual donors. We are able to save this dog ONLY because we are supported by a community of people who believe in the work done by the SPCA. Someone in our community committed this horrible act of brutality. But at the same time, we the SPCA, are able to exist because people in our community care about animals. Even though there is bad out there, there is good out there as well.

A gift to the SPCA will help this dog and other other dogs like her.
