SPCA Service Guide for Youths

Pet Pal Hal

Tips:
  • Never do activities by yourself. Always make sure that you have your parent’s or a legal guardian’s permission. If you are going door to door, have an adult accompany you. If you are doing a fundraising stand, always use the buddy system. Have your friends and older brothers and sisters help. Ask your parents or another adult to supervise your sale.
  • Never go into someone’s home or approach a car to make a sale or give information.

  • Never go with someone asking for help in finding their pet. Get an adult.

  • Never approach a stray animal on your own or go onto someone’s private property to check on an animal.

  • If you are doing a fundraiser, pick a good, safe location. If your house isn't on a street with lots of foot traffic, try one of these ideas: church or temple parking lots after worship services; athletic games; the local supermarket; outside your community swimming pool or recreation center. Ask your parent(s) to help you get permission.

  • If you are hanging up flyers or passing out materials to educate the community, always ask permission from businesses where you want to post the flyers or handout items.

  • Price it right. Have a parent help you figure out the cost per product. Also, sometimes it is better to ask for donations instead of assigning a price to items.

  • Have a safe place to keep your money from sales. You will need some money to make change before you start. Don't forget to deduct that amount at the end of the day when figuring your profits.

  • Get attention! Decorate your stand with brightly colored balloons, streamers, pinwheels, and posters.

  • Advertise. Make signs and flyers and post them around the neighborhood or sales area and on community and grocery store bulletin boards (ask for permission). Be sure to include the date, time and location and mention the charity you're raising funds for.

  • Be polite and cheerful. Smile at your customers and thank them for stopping by, even if they don't buy anything.

  • Be enthusiastic and have fun. When people see how much you love the animals, it will shine a light and make them want to learn more too.

  • Clean up your area at the end of the day.
